New life for 16 millions of secondhand clothing

04-07-2018

The Foundation has recovered 8,120 tons of textile used in Spain during the first semester of 2018. This record is equivalent to 16.8 million garments to which Humana gives a new life thanks to its reintroduction in the market either being reused or recycled.

The garments come from the more than 5,000 containers where the clothing, footwear, accessories and home textiles that we no longer use and to which Humana gives a second life are deposited. The Foundation helps to turn a waste into a resource, favoring the decrease in the volume of waste that ends up in a waste treatment center or discharges in an inappropriate way. The textile collection service is free and represents a significant saving in the costs of collection and disposal of urban solid waste.

The reuse and recycling of textiles contribute to saving resources, protecting the environment and fighting against climate change. The 8,120 tons recovered represent a saving of 25,734 tons of CO2 to the atmosphere.

Goal 2025

Despite these figures, Elisabeth Molnar, Humana Fundación Pueblo para People General manager, warns that "there is still a long way to go, since only 10% of the million tons of clothing that Spaniards dispose of annually is recovered, which means that administrations, organizations and citizens must redouble their efforts to achieve greater awareness of the importance of depositing textile waste in the right container so that it can have new life ".

The reason for optimism is that the European Union requires the selective collection of textile waste before January 1, 2025, which should boost the municipalities, given that waste management is the responsibility of the municipality, to promote recycling and recycling. reuse of clothing and footwear.
