Threads Of Change: used clothing as a tool to get a positive change on the Planet

13-01-2025

At The Federation Humana People to People, we are deeply committed to driving positive, sustainable change across the Global North and South. Second-hand clothing (SHC) is a powerful way to make this vision a reality. That’s why we’re excited to announce the launch of our hashtag#ThreadsOfChange campaign!

The goal?
To raise awareness about the socioeconomic impact of the SHC industry and the untapped opportunities it holds for communities and the planet.

Why does it matter?
Second-hand clothing isn’t just about giving clothes a second life. It’s about supporting livelihoods, empowering local communities and fostering a more sustainable circular economy. With the right support, policy and vision, we believe SHC can achieve even greater impact.

Socio-economic impact of second-hand clothing in Africa and the EU27+

Second-hand clothing contributes billions of euros to the GDP of Europe and Africa, where it contributes to the creation of thousands of green jobs. This is revealed by the report on “The socio-economic impact of second-hand clothing in Africa and the EU27+”, prepared by Oxford Economics on behalf of Humana People to People and Sympany+.

The study analyses and quantifies the socio-economic benefits of the second-hand clothing sector in the European Union and the United Kingdom (EU27+), as well as the effects of its exports in three African countries: Ghana, Kenya and Mozambique. It is the first comprehensive analysis of the entire value chain of the sector and an attempt to quantify its impact on two continents.

The sector contributed an estimated €7 billion to the gross domestic product (GDP) of the EU27+ in 2023, adding direct, indirect and induced impacts. Of this amount, €3 billion corresponds to direct impact, according to the report. In Germany and the UK alone, it contributed €670 million and €420 million to GDP, respectively.
