Something two months after the passage of Cyclone Idai life is still making its way in Mozambique. The balance, however, is bleak: more than two million people in need of humanitarian aid, at least 75,000 people who have had to move when they lost their homes and all their belongings and more than a thousand victims, according to UN data.
This situation has not prevented affected communities from beginning to recover and to rebuild their homes, villages, schools, communication routes, etc. And here, the support of non-governmental organizations and resources from abroad, are of paramount importance when it comes to carrying out these tasks.
It must also be borne in mind that, days after the arrival of the Idai, Cyclone Kenneth arrived on the coasts of the province of Cabo Delgado, causing equally serious human and material damage.
Balance of the campaign to support the victims
Days after the passage of the Idai, the Foundation and other organizations belonging to the Federation Humana to People People launched a campaign to support the victims. The funds raised through the stores for this campaign amount to 7,357 euros, the result of donations made by a total of 5,500 customers and the effort and involvement of the team. This amount, added to the 2,385 euros collected through the fund fundraising platform GoFundMe, the support of external collaborators and the staff itself through their donations, will help our colleagues of ADPP-Mozambique to continue working with the affected communities, mainly from the district of Nhamatanda.
After the passage of the cyclone ADPP activated the program "Começar De Novo", formed by various initiatives: distribution of emergency kits, training of personnel for the implementation of actions to prevent contagious diseases, vaccination campaigns against cholera, distribution of food, drinking water, seeds and tools for the field. One of the last actions undertaken to date has been the delivery to 2,250 small farmers in Nhamatanda of tomato, onion and lettuce seeds, as well as other supplies such as watering cans to use in their gardens.
In the YouTube channel of the Foundation are already available to some videos in which it is possible to see the magnitude of the disaster and the recovery efforts undertaken and that collect interesting testimonies in first person of what happened.
