Official inauguration of the cuys marketing project in Quisapincha-Ecuador

On June 9, the official inauguration ceremony of the Project: Increase of production capacity of guinea pigs with value chain approach of 250 indigenous farmers of Quisapincha took place in the Coliseo de Quisapincha, in the province of Tungurahua, Tungurahua '. This project implemented by the Fundación Humana Pueblo a Pueblo Ecuador has the support of the Spanish Cooperation AECID, the Provincial Government of Tungurahua and the active participation of the communities involved.

The main purpose of the action is to organize and optimize the production of cuys. With an investment of 383,000 euros, the purpose is that it suppose a stimulus for the whole of the local economy. The guinea pig is a very popular animal in the Andean region of Latin America, better known in our country as "guinea pigs" or "guinea pigs". In Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia or Peru, guinea pig meat (onomatopoeic name of Quechua quwi) is highly valued because it has a high nutritional value thanks to its low fat and high protein content.

The project, of two years, aims to consolidate a cooperative with 250 farmers for the production of the animal, its storage and subsequent sale, promoting the participation of women at all levels. The initiative includes the cultivation of grass fields adapted to the diet of the rodent.

Administrations and civil society

The inauguration ceremony was attended by representatives of all levels of the administration and the local society involved, including José Antonio Romero, Governor of the province of Tungurahua; Mario Fanjul, Head of Projects, Planning and Communication of the Spanish Cooperation in Ecuador; Bjarne Hjorth, President of Fundación Humana Pueblo a Pueblo Ecuador; and Lone Torbensen, Representative of the People to People Human Federation. The Presidents of the Community Councils also attended, as well as several families who were mobilized from their communities to accompany the event.

Several of the people who are part of the local associations involved and of the Humana Pueblo to Pueblo Ecuador Foundation were in charge of setting up a small stand with a sample of the products obtained in the communities of Quisapincha, such as fruits, vegetables or medicinal herbs. They also showed some guinea pigs as an example of the work that is being developed.
