03-02-2020

Humana Fundación Pueblo for Pueblo is the winner of the contract for the provision of collection of used clothing and other textiles domestic waste of Alcorcón (Comunidad de Madrid) , tendered by ESMASA Empresa de Servicios Municipales de Alcorcón. The contract includes the installation and management of a network of 85 containers on public roads. The duration of the contract is one year, with annual extensions up to a maximum of two.

The containers are the usual green color of the Foundation, identified with the logos of Humana Fundación Pueblo para Pueblo and ESMASA itself.

Environmental benefit of sustainable textile management

The selective collection of the textile fraction and its subsequent preparation for reuse has several benefits: the first is environmental, because it reduces waste generation and contributes to the fight against climate change. Thus, for every kilo of textile that is recovered and therefore not conducted to a waste treatment center for incineration or burial, 3,169 kg of CO2 are no longer emitted, according to a study by the European Union.

This means that 17,573 tons of clothing and footwear recovered by the Foundation in 2019 amount to 55,689 tons of CO2 not emitted thanks to its sustainable management. This amount of CO2 represents the annual emission of 21,000 cars (circulating 15,000 km annually) or the annual carbon dioxide absorption of 416,000 trees.

Clothing used for social purposes
The social benefit is the creation of inclusive, stable and quality jobs: Humana generates an indefinite job for every 36,000 kg of textile collected, with a team of more than 650 people.

On the other hand, the resources obtained with textile management are used for social projects: after more than three decades of activity, 2.5 million people have been involved in development programs in the countries of the South by the hand of Your local partners. Since 1987, the Foundation has allocated more than 31 million euros for the training of primary school teachers, the promotion of sustainable agriculture or the fight against HIV / AIDS, among other actions.

Plant for Preparation for Reuse in Leganés
Humana has a Reuse Preparation Plant in Leganés, in which the recovered textile is processed in Madrid, downtown and other autonomous communities. This is the facility dedicated to the largest textile management in Spain, with 10,000 square meters of surface, in which more than 7,000 tons of clothing and footwear are processed annually to give it a second life and turn them into a resource.

A management with a vision of circular economy
“Humana helps to make the waste management sector more sustainable with a vision of circular economy,” says Elisabeth Molnar, general director of the Foundation, “since it reintroduces garments in the value chain, generates resources with a social impact positive, creates green and sustainable employment, affects the local sphere and promotes the improvement of the living conditions of the most disadvantaged communities thanks to development cooperation programs ”.
Molnar recalls that in 2025 all countries of the European Union must have established a separate collection for textile waste, "which will undoubtedly increase the low rates of separation at source, which now do not exceed 10% in Spain." “From Humana, we positively value the work of municipalities such as Alcorcón that already promote the selective collection of textiles. We are facing an opportunity and a huge challenge to give the definitive impulse to the appropriate management of this resource, faithful to the hierarchy of waste and to a circular economic model, in which the prevention and reintroduction of the textile in the production chain takes priority, prolonging its life cycle.
