The selective collection of textile waste in Humana containers allowed a total of 19,074 tonnes (equivalent to 77.2 million garments) to be recovered in 2024, which represents an increase of 6.3% compared to the previous year (17,946 tonnes).
Textile waste (clothing, footwear, accessories and household textiles that are no longer used) is deposited in the 5,450 points we have, located in easily accessible places.
Our team processes the recovered textiles in the preparation plants for reuse located in Leganés (Madrid) and l’Ametlla del Vallès (Barcelona), under the principles of the waste hierarchy that, after prevention, prioritises reuse.
63% of the textiles we manage each year are reused and 28% are destined for recycling. In this way, more than 90% of the clothes that citizens throw away and that Humana collects have a second life.
Environmental and social benefit of sustainable textile management
The environmental management that we carry out is highly professional and focuses on obtaining the highest possible reuse rates. This management contributes to the fight against the consequences of climate change: for every kg of clothing recovered (and that does not end up in a landfill to be incinerated) the emission of 6.1 kg of CO2 is avoided, according to a study by the Federation Humana People to People. The 19,074 tons recovered in Spain in 2024 therefore avoided the emission of 116,354 tons of CO2.
The fundamental added value of this entire process is that it allows us to generate funds for our social aspect, which materializes in the international cooperation for development programs that we carry out in countries in the Southern countries and the urban agriculture and local support actions promoted in Spain.
Our social aspect is complemented by the creation of green jobs: we generate one job in Spain for every 25 tons of textiles collected, reaching a workforce of 740 people.
