Humana improves processes at the Leganés plant with European funds

03-09-2024

Humana Fundación Pueblo para Pueblo has carried out various improvements in its facilities in Leganés thanks to the Next Generation EU recovery funds obtained through the corresponding call from the Community of Madrid.

The improvements introduced at a global level allow for more space in the plant, optimising certain processes and advancing in the safety and occupational health of the teams.

At a more specific level, investment has been made in new equipment and material, such as a new strapping machine, in the calibration of portable scales and in supports for bags, among other elements.

In addition, the software for controlling the processes of preparation for the reuse of textiles in this same plant has been improved.

Preparation for reuse in Leganés

Humana has two plants for preparation for reuse in Leganés, which add up to more than 10,000 square metres for textile management. A team of 200 people carry out their daily work in them.

The plants have a maximum storage capacity of 240 tonnes of textiles and a planned management capacity of 30,000 tonnes.

Nine out of 10 garments that pass through the plant have a second life through reuse and recycling. In 2023, the percentages were specifically as follows:

  • 22% is destined for the secondhand fashion stores that Humana has in Spain.
  • 41% of the processed garments are exported, mainly to be sold at low prices to local merchants to meet the demand of these countries, promote local economic activity and generate resources for the development of communities.
  • 28% of used clothing is in a state that does not allow its reuse, so it is sold to textile recycling companies.
  • 1% is made up of other recyclable waste that is placed in the hands of the corresponding authorized managers.
  • 3% is textile waste destined for energy recovery.
  • 5% is banal waste (unusable textiles and other non-recyclable waste), which ends up in a landfill for final disposal.
