Humana opens its most emblematic vintage store in the fashion epicenter of Barcelona

15-12-2023

In 1987 the first Humana store opened in Santa Coloma de Gramenet. 36 years later, this December 2023, the Foundation's most emblematic Vintage Store has been inaugurated, on Carrer de Portaferrissa, 21, Barcelona, in the heart of the epicenter of second-hand fashion.

To celebrate, an event took place yesterday as the official opening of this new space, with the presence of representatives from the field of sustainable fashion, the Circular Fashion Pact and waste management, mainly from Catalonia.

The new store offers 300 square meters dedicated to vintage fashion, distributed over two floors and with an offer of 6,000 items. It is located in one of the commercial arteries of the area, close to other secondhand points of sale. Humana's objective is to complement the current offer with its second-hand fashion proposal at affordable prices and with a social purpose.

Presence of Isaac Peraire, Director of the Waste Agency of Catalonia

Among the large audience - up to 180 people at some points during the event - were Isaac Peraire, Director of the Waste Agency of Catalonia, Joana Badell and Elisabeth Molnar, patron and general director of Humana Fundación Pueblo para Pueblo, respectively.

During his speech, Peraire expressed that “the opening of this new second-hand store represents what we work for from the Administration: the full dignity of reused clothing to put it on the same level as new clothing. Wearing second-hand clothes is fashionable today.”

Peraire highlighted that “The amount of textile waste we generate and the small amount that is collected is a scandal, at most 12%. Reuse is a good practice and this store appears at the heart of a commercial movement that we want to be sustainable.”

In the case of Humana, the reuse of textiles is a driver of development and job creation, here and in Southern countries. It allows us to develop actions that improve the lives of the communities that need it most, working in areas such as education or agriculture.

Molnar, who has led Humana since its launch in 1987, 'explained that Humana was born 36 years ago and today maintains its values intact. Second-hand fashion has many positive effects, among which are environmental protection and development cooperation.” The patron of the foundation, Joana Badell, highlighted how reused fashion “contributes to a change in mentality among consumers, especially among the youngest, with more environmental awareness. It is not a passing trend but a reality that is on the rise.”
