EWWR: The million garment collected challenge is running again

13-11-2019

Humana intends to recover a million items during the European Week of Waste Reduction (EWWR), which begins this Saturday 16 and lasts until Sunday 24 November.

For the second consecutive year, the Foundation imposes this challenge to contribute to the prevention of waste and give a second life to this million garments through reuse or recycling. In the 2018 edition, 444 tons were collected or, what is the same, 919,000 garments.

The 11th edition of the European Week of Waste Reduction puts the focus on education and communication to encourage a change in behavior when producing and buying products and managing waste. “Reducing the generation of waste is not only a legal obligation but a social, economic and environmental need,” the organizers of the event defend, “we have to educate and communicate to show the environmental impact of poorly managed waste.

The planet and resources are finite, we have to look for ways to produce and consume more sustainably, going towards a circular economy, in balance with our environment ”. Therefore, during the Week campaigns and activities are carried out to improve communication and education in waste prevention.

Elisabeth Molnar, general director of Humana Pueblo Foundation for People, notes: “The European Week of Waste Prevention is an excellent opportunity to insist on the importance of not generating unnecessary waste and of proposing initiatives to make the sector more sustainable, with a Circular economy vision. Textile waste is in a resource with a second life and thus we contribute to the sustainability of the Planet. Discarded garments are an asset that, managed with a social vocation, becomes the engine of progress in Spain and a generator of funds for development cooperation in the southern hemisphere. ”

Activities of the Foundation during the EWWR

In addition to the challenge of collecting as much clothing as possible for a social purpose, Humana is deeply involved in the European Week of Waste Reduction. Therefore, it promotes these other activities:

  • The sensitization workshop “DIY Puppets and Sustainable Bags” in three municipalities: Rubí (Barcelona), La Garriga (Barcelona) and Castrillón (Asturias).
  • Caprabo supermarkets in Catalonia will distribute 8,500 information leaflets to customers about the importance of waste prevention and reuse.
  • Solidarity campaign for the collection of used clothing in the offices of Caprabo, until November 19.
