EWWR: Join a challenge of millions of garments

12-11-2018

From Saturday 17 November to Sunday 25 a new edition of the European Week for Waste Reduction is celebrated, whose objective is to show and promote activities to reduce the generation of waste, Humana is deeply involved with awareness activities and with the challenge to recover the largest volume of textile throughout the 9 days of the event, and thus exceed the record achieved last year.

In this edition there will be a common action in Europe to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Week: the organization puts the emphasis on the excessive consumption of products whose components are potentially toxic or polluting for nature and for the human being. That's why the motto is "Time to detox!" (It's time to detoxify!), So society can reflect on hazardous waste, so called because they can contain explosive, flammable or toxic properties: they can be present in small or large quantities, in household cleaning products, DIY, batteries, fluorescents, light bulbs, insecticides, fuels or electronic devices.

Hazardous waste poses a greater risk to the environment and human health than other types of waste. Therefore it is essential to make responsible use at the time of purchase and submit them to proper management when they are discarded. In the more than 5,200 containers of the Foundation, tons and tons of used textiles are collected daily, which are then treated in the preparation plants for reuse. However, improper elements also appear that are conveniently separated and delivered to the corresponding waste managers.

Scheduled activities

To publicize the objectives of the European Week of Waste Prevention, Humana has scheduled the following activities:

  • "The big challenge: collecting used textiles". During last year's edition, we recovered 456 tons of clothing and footwear throughout Spain, 21% more than in the same period of the previous year. The proper management of these garments prevented the emission of 1,445 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. The challenge this year is, again, to overcome these figures.
  • Children and adults will learn the benefits of reuse with our awareness workshop "Puppets and DIY Sustainable Bags", which takes place in nine municipalities: Sant Carles de la Ràpita (Tarragona), Rubí (Barcelona), Madrid, Montgat (Barcelona), Vilablareix (Girona), Calella (Barcelona), Sant Vicenç de Castellet (Barcelona), Amposta (Tarragona) and Valmojado (Toledo).
  • As every year, Caprabo supermarkets will distribute 8,500 informative flyers among their customers about the importance of waste prevention and reuse. In addition, the establishments of Sant Carles de la Ràpita and Amposta will host an awareness workshop.
  • Caprabo has organized an informative session on reuse, the circular economy and the destination of textiles at its headquarters in l'Hospitalet del Llobregat (Barcelona). It will be Thursday the 22nd in three sessions addressed to its staff.
  • The exhibition "Quality education and development of the countries of the South" will be held in Vilablareix (Girona) from November 17 to 25, while the exhibition "The importance of women in development" will be from November 19 to 26 in Roda de Berà (Tarragona).

The thematic axes of the Week

Responsible consumption (not buying more than necessary and avoiding disposable behaviors), the ecodesign of products (lower consumption of raw materials and energy, the extension of its useful life, and a reduction in the use of toxic compounds and superfluous packaging), as well as the promotion of repair and reuse, are the thematic axes of the activities that during the Week can be organized by organizations, companies, town halls, neighborhood associations, schools and other interested groups. The most outstanding actions of each edition receive the recognition of the European Prize of Prevention of Residues.
