11-09-2024

The project for the empowerment and social, economic and cultural leadership of Kichwa women in the province of Tungurahua, Ecuador, continues. Recently, 1,230 guinea pigs and 2,000 shrub plants, as well as other inputs, have been delivered. The project, implemented by Humana Fundación Pueblo para Pueblo and the Fundación Humana Pueblo a Pueblo - Ecuador, is funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation AECID.

Guinea pig: meat with low fat content and high nutritional value

The delivery of guinea pigs was carried out to strengthen the diversification of production and food sovereignty of the farms of the participating families. In this case, the animals were distributed among 205 families in Quisapincha, Pinllo, Pasa, San Fernando and the Tisaleo canton.

Guinea pig meat has a low fat content and high nutritional value; it also favors the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. The delivery of the guinea pigs took place with the support of the District Directorate of Tungurahua of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Farming. Its staff was in charge of weighing the specimens, so that all the animals had minimum zootechnical conditions.

The families, at the same time, are participating in training sessions on agricultural and livestock issues, under the Interinstitutional Cooperation Agreement between the District Directorate of Tungurahua, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock farming and Humana Ecuador itself.

2,000 shrub plants, corn and alfalfa

Last July, a total of 2,000 alder shrub plants were delivered to 403 people involved in the project, donated by the Provincial Government of Tungurahua. The plants will be used to create living fences for the farms. They are very useful because they provide nitrogen to the soil.

Previously, 170 rolls of galvanized mesh for the creation of sheds, 900 kilos of fodder corn and 729 kg of purple alfalfa were distributed among 325 women and 78 men from the parishes of Quisapincha, Pasa, San Fernando, Juan Benigno Vela and the cantons of Tisaleo and Cevallos. The cereals will be used to feed the guinea pigs.
