Despite having to walk a long distance to school each day, 11-year-old Dorcas does not faint: she dreams of one day becoming a teacher or a doctor.
“I like being at Children’s Town because the teachers are very friendly and always ready to help us,” explains a shy Dorcas. “I am learning to speak English correctly; and to make sure that the classrooms and the school are in good condition, when it comes to cleaning and maintenance ”.
Dorcas, who was born in Kaoma district in Zambia's westernmost province, is the fourth of five siblings. When she moved to Chibombo in 2020 to live with her grandparents, she joined Children 's Town, entering third grade.
Her grandmother has to spend a lot of time in bed due to a chronic illness, while her grandfather has a physical disability. Her life, therefore, is not easy, since she does not have a family that can take care of her as she deserves, and depends on the help provided by friends and neighbors.
Dorcas knows exactly why she wants to become a teacher or a doctor. She never misses class, despite the distance from her house to school. She fulfills her obligations, does her homework and is a good companion. “I want to help other children in the same way that my teachers have been helping me,” she explains.
The Children’s Town teaching team is well aware of Dorcas's commitment. For this reason, she is part of the Sponsor Program, providing him with books and school supplies. She also receives the uniforms and backpack that she needs to go to school.
“We want to see her complete her education and achieve her dream of becoming a doctor. Despite her complicated family situation, she wants to learn more and more every day ”, says her teacher.
This is one more example of self-improvement and how many boys and girls, despite their complex family reality, are capable of becoming men and women of benefit, an example for the rest of the members of their communities.
