On Friday, April 22, the inauguration of the "Quisacuy" Guinea Pig Slaughter Center took place, completing one of the main milestones of the project 'Increasing the production capacity of guinea pigs with a value chain approach of 250 indigenous farmers. de Quisapincha, Tungurahua', co-financed by the AECID. The project is being implemented by Humana and its local partner in Ecuador, Fundación Humana Pueblo a Pueblo.
The center has been built in an area of 2,482 square meters, located in the Condezan sector. It has a capacity to process 500 guinea pigs daily. Its management will be carried out by the Pushak Kawsay Corporation, made up of farmers from the area, after receiving full training on raising guinea pigs, good agricultural practices and marketing techniques. In Ecuador, Bolivia, Colombia or Peru, guinea pig meat is highly valued because it has a high nutritional value thanks to its low fat and high protein content.
Ana Sedamanos, from the Fundación Humana Pueblo a Pueblo, and Richard Molina, vice president of the Pushak Kawsay Corporation, chaired the event and highlighted the importance of the inauguration taking place on Earth Day, in "our only home, Mother Earth." ”.
Among the attendees, the Prefect of the Province of Tungurahua, Dr. Manuel Caizabanda, emphasized the importance of trying to protect the food security of the communities, thanking the AECID and the Fundación Humana for their work in making the project possible, crystallized in actions such as the opening of this slaughterhouse.
Promotion of associationism and active presence of women
Upon arriving in Quisapincha in 2018, Fundación Humana found a problem that is repeated in many other places in Ecuador: the lack of associative cooperation. The community was organized into different small associations that worked independently. With the support of the Foundation's technical team, 10 of these associations gradually became involved in the project. Through a training plan on associationism, conflict management and cooperation, they were brought together into a single group, the Pushak Kawsay Corporation, whose translation is 'Leading life'.
Sandra Caiza, President of the Gender Equality Commission of the Municipality of Ambato, emphasized the role of women in the project, calling for them to continue developing their capacities.
For the project, it has been very important that, together with the work carried out on issues such as improving productivity in guinea pig breeding, it insisted on gender equality. For this reason, awareness-raising actions on violence and the gender gap were organized, and female empowerment was promoted. After three years of work, they have become the true leaders of the project, with Nancy Carrillo as president of the Pushak Kawsay Corporation.
