The social agriculture program 3C Cultivating Climate and Community has revealed itself as an active and proactive program that puts the accent to a large extent on the third 'C', that of community. The program involves other actors and a varied collection of people who approach social agriculture through the various activities carried out, with solidarity in some of the cases.
More than a ton of organic vegetables from 3C Tordera (Barcelona) has gone to the local Food Bank, where they are distributed among the users of this service. It is the solidarity contribution of the activists, a heterogeneous group of people derived mostly from the municipal area of ??Social Services, who for a year donate the surplus so that residents without resources have fresh vegetables, directly from the land.
Every Monday, volunteers from the Food and Clothing Distribution Center (CEDAR) go to the garden located at the entrance of the municipality and collect the boxes full of vegetables prepared previously by the activists. Apparently they are boxes like any other, but their content gives meaning to the work of the Foundation. It is another contribution of the 3C social and urban agriculture program.
The origin of the donations dates back to three years ago, when the 3C was launched in Tordera, in a space provided by the City Council. He did it with the same challenges as the rest of 3C we promoted in Spain: that users learn to work a plot applying the principles of sustainable agriculture, that they were self-sufficient to produce organic and proximity foods, and that they converted the garden in a relational space to generate community.
The first promotion completed its two-year cycle and new activists arrived. Some of the first ones, called "certified activists", continue in their plots and although they still enjoy the advice of Ángel Cabezas, agricultural technician of Humana, they manage themselves.
10% donation
To continue linked to 3C of Tordera, the certified activists committed to donate about 10% of their production to CEDAR. "His permanence contributes to maintaining the social fabric not only among us but also with the entities of Tordera. Having received our training, they are now able to achieve food sovereignty and not only produce food for self-consumption but for others who do not have access to a healthy and ecological diet, "explains Cabezas.
The truth is that all activists, old and new, willingly collaborate voluntarily to carry out the donation. There are currently 14 users (34 adding both promotions) that produce an average of 320 kg per year for self-consumption. Since the solidary distribution started a year ago, the number of vegetables delivered amounts to 1,080 kg: 645 kg in 2017 and 435 in what we have been in 2018.
Jairo López and his wife Judit Landoño belong to the second class of activists. They collaborate happily in the weekly donation to the Food Bank. "Our production covers our needs and we have plenty to spare. We have very clear that we must help those who have less, so we always contribute what we can ", explains Judit.
"High quality vegetables"
"We are very grateful", confesses Manel, one of the volunteers who collects the boxes to take them to CEDAR, "the vegetables are of great quality. It is true that every Sunday we go to the market and sellers also give us vegetables, but it is the one that is left over. On the other hand, we know that what they donate to us in the garden is collected at that precise moment and the quality is very noticeable ". The center distributes clothing and food weekly to between 20 and 30 family units. "Although quantitatively it is not much, the donation of this social garden is highly valued," he concludes.
The food that is distributed from the CEDAR comes mostly from the European Union, the Food Bank of Barcelona and the purchases made by the City Council of Tordera. To this we must add other contributions such as 3C. "Fresh vegetables from the social garden are very welcome," insists Manel.
From the Consistory, the Councilor for Social Services, Angel Pous, values ??the collaboration with Humana in the social agriculture program: "The most relevant work of our department is to promote initiatives that achieve the inclusion and integration of people. It's great that Humana offered to participate in the 3C program because this garden fits perfectly with our purposes. This place acts as a meeting point between its participants, here they can meet and interact".
